2015 Blue Diamond Prelude Remains an Option for Burnstone

January 27th, 2015

Charging home to secure an impressive maiden victory in his racing debut at Sandown on Monday, trainer Robbie Griffiths has revealed the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude C&G (1100m) on February 14th remains a likely option for Burnstone.

Jumping from the gates well in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m), Burnstone immediately charged to the fore of the pack and set a reasonable tempo away from the barriers and rounding the bend.

Appearing to be fading in stamina when dropping back into the pack on the final straight, the Redoute’s Choice colt kicked well over the final 300m and again pulled clear; hitting the line a comfortably three-and-a-half lengths in the clear of closest rival Top Me Up.

Understandably thrilled with the two-year-old’s maiden racing performance, Griffiths told Racing Ahead he expected the fifth-placed Mesa to be challenging for victory in the dying stages of the Blue Diamond Preview and will allow Burnstone’s form to dictate a berth in the 2015 Blue Diamond Prelude.

“He did a little, not a surprise but just because he’s only had the one trial in and he’d never been away from Cranbourne,” Griffiths said.

“I think all trainers are a bit tentative until they see exactly if the horse they are saddling up with do what they do at home away from home.

“He’s always showed us great talent, but the Blue Diamond Prelude is a race full of great potential and I would have thought pre-race that some of the more experienced horses like the O’Shea horse (Mesa) that was favourite would have been the one that would have been the more-likely winner.

“Delighted with his performance and he’s pulled up great.

“I’m going to leave it up to how he trains closer to the 14th of February when the Prelude come around,”

“He will be nominated and we’ll just see how he is leading into it; he’s only had one 800m trial last Monday at the Cranbourne training complex leading into yesterday’s run so we though pre-race that we had room to improve both fitness and with experience away from his home track.

“We always thought we would be running in the Prelude on the 14th as a lead-in to the final but now that he’s won and he’s exempt from the ballot you would think we’re in a good position that we can make up our mind closer to the 14th.”
